1029 - Are you exempt from paying Class 4 National Insurance contributions (NICs)
You are exempt from paying Class 4 National Insurance contributions (NICs) if on 6 April 2017 you were:
- at or over State Pension age, at the beginning of the year of assessment (including if you reach State Pension age on 6 April 2017)
- under 16 and the National Insurance Contributions and Employer Office (NIC&EO) had granted you an 'exception'
- during the tax year 6 April 2017 to 5 April 2018 you were not resident in the UK for tax purposes (if you are not sure whether this applies to you please contact HM Revenue and Customs)
