Description
A Frequency Converter is an integral component within a satellite telecommunications transmitter or receiver system and is used as an intermediate stage for transmission or reception via satellite. The main, essential function is frequency conversion and gain. With a typical gain 30 dB, ±3 dB at centre frequency. A Frequency Converter comprises electronic components and circuit boards in a metal chassis or casing. An RF Frequency Converter generally consists of an a local oscillator, RF filtering, a mixer and a frequency multiplier. The converter also performs one or more stages of signal amplification. Some converter variations may also incorporate multiple local oscillators, gain control and slope/gain compensation components. The Frequency Converter forms part of a satellite telecommunications “system” which is used for communications over commercial frequency satellites. The “system” provides voice and data connectivity to radio frequency (RF) networks. The telecommunications system comprises of a satellite antenna, transmit or receive amplifier, frequency converter and cabling to both power source and signal transmission beyond RF. RF frequency converters condition incoming microwave signals into different frequency ranges to allow for differing signal processing options, Interface connectors include: AC/DC Power: RF Input and RF Output Electro-mechanical assembly. Electronic components and circuit boards are housed in a metal chassis or casing. For shipment the units are packaged in purpose designed cardboard carton with foam inserts.
