Description
A High Power Amplifier (HPA) is a critical component in the transmission chain of many RF (radio frequency) and microwave systems, commonly used in applications such as cellular networks, satellite telecommunications and digital broadcasting. The primary function of an HPA is to amplify low-power RF signals to high power levels suitable for transmission over large distance. The HPA sits at the front end of the transmission chain behind the Aerial or antenna for wireless transmission of various types of traffic such as voice, images or other data commonly associated with a wireless communication network. The term HPA is often a generic term applied to different types of microwave amplifier such as SSPA, TWTA, KPA. The item in question, Travelling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA), consists of the traveling wave tube (TWT) and the power supply. The TWT can have either a helix or coupled-cavity design. The TWT is similar to the KPA in that it is an example of a device based on modulating the flow of electrons in a linear beam, but differs from the klystron by the continuous interaction of the electrons with the RF field over the full length of the tube instead of within the gaps of a few resonant cavities. Interface connectors include: DC Power: RF Input and RF Output Electro-mechanical assembly. Electronic components and circuit boards are housed in a metal chassis or casing. For shipment the units are packaged in purpose designed steel or timber cases with protective packaging material.

Justification
Classification has been determined in accordance with the following: - General Interpretative Rules (GIR)s: For the purposes of determining the commodity codes within which goods most appropriately fall, Reg 3 (1) of The Customs Tariff (Establishment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 sets out that the rules of interpretation contained in the following have effect – a. Part Two (Goods Classification Table Rules of Interpretation) of the Tariff of the United Kingdom (Reg 3(1)(a)); and b. Notes to a section or chapter of the Goods Classification Table (Reg 3(1)(b)). GIR 1 - Has been used to classify this product by the terms of heading 8543 - Electrical machines and apparatus, having individual functions, not specified or included elsewhere in this chapter. GIR 5 (b) - has been used to identify the type of packaging - For shipment the units are packaged in purpose designed steel or timber cases with protective packaging material. GIR 6 - Has been used to classify the goods to subheading level 8543 70 - Other machines and apparatus. Digit Code: 854370 02 - Microwave Amplifiers. Also Classified in Accordance with: Harmonized System Explanatory Notes (HSENs) (9) to Heading 8543 - High or intermediate frequency amplifiers (including measurement amplifiers and aerial amplifiers).
