Description
A 10kHz sonar transducer for a submarine underwater telephone. The transducer is designed specifically only for underwater communication, and it is used as part of an underwater telephone system for communication with other vessels. The apparatus communicates in the marine environment i.e. seawater, it is not part of a telecommunication network as such (there would generally only be one or two other transmitter/receivers in direct communication). Also, the transducer converts electrical signals from a transmitter/receiver into pressure waves in the water and vice-versa (as a microphone/speaker would in air). The product can receive, transmit and does the conversion both ways. It differs from a microphone in its receiving function it is a hydrophone (designed to work in water) whereas a microphone is designed to work in air. Also, it functions as a transmitter, as a speaker would do in air. The apparatus is part of a communication system and cannot be operated without signal generating and amplification equipment. It is made from multiple components, including urethane resin dome, mounting plate, housing, transformer, transducer stalk, cable gland and stainless-steel fasteners. It is packaged in dedicated SPIS packaging (wooden crate).
