Description
The SDO (Sensory Dynamic Orthosis) orthoses with Steels are made to measure and fully bespoke class 1 medical devices. These products are only available on the prescription of a qualified orthotist, neuro-physio or physiotherapist. They are designed and manufactured according to the needs of each individual patient and to address very specific medical conditions. The SDO orthoses both support the body in a fixed predetermined position and through the proprioceptive feedback have a carryover effect for muscle memory. Expansion zippers are typically also incorporated into the orthoses. These can be opened to relieve the tension for periods when the patient becomes fatigued and needs to rest from the correction enforced by the orthosis. The combination of proprioception from the base fabric, tension forces to realign the body from the panels under a calculated compression at specific points within the orthoses, are fundamental to the performance of SDO. The orthoses are used to support improvements in posture and stability, and to allow normalisation of postural tone, motor output, dynamic function of movement, fluency of movement, reduced involuntary movements, normalisation of tone. They are used to manage neurological conditions including cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, acquired spinal injury, cerebellar ataxia, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson's, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome to name a few examples. They are used extensively in spinal muscular atrophy and muscular dystrophies such as Duchenne’s, as well as other neurodegenerative diseases to provide correction of the spine where scoliosis is present. Orthoses are supplied as standard with one or two flexi steels. The benefit of the steels is to provide an opportunity to deactivate muscles and allow the steels to literally take over and enable the patient to rest. The flexible steels or boning are incorporated into a fabric casing within the garment to provide additional support. The steels are removable for laundering. There are two types of steels. Type 1. Solid flexi steel which has been powder coated A) Steel thickness 0.8mm Steel width 11.0mm Lengths 10, 11, 13, 15, 17.5, 20, 23, 25, 28, 30, 33, 35, 38, 40cm B) Steel thickness 0.8mm Steel width 22.0mm Lengths 48.2, 26.5, 24.2 cm Type 2. Spiral stainless boning. Wire thickness 0.9mm Width 9.8mm Thickness 1.55mm Lengths 7, 10, 13, 15, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 31, 33, 36cm. One or two steels are included as standard specific to the orthosis type. The orthoses are not adjustable. Garments are packaged in a simple plastic sealed bag.
